As the sun goes down on the Maasai Mara an Oxpecker prepares to land on the nose of one of Africa’s larger gazelles, the Eland. The birds are friend and foe, alike; at times removing pests and parasites but other times pecking at wounds and pulling out fur. Most of the time the birds are tolerated and barely noticed. Sometimes, however, they swat at them with their tails and shake them loose, while ducking and dodging their return.
