The Softness of Bears 3I7811

A mother brown bear scans the meadow while she and her cubs graze on the ample green grasses that the Alaskan peninsula has to offer. Her healthy coat of fur appears soft and supple, but is a bear’s fur really that soft? Mammal fur is generally made up of longer, coarse guard hairs and shorter, downy wool hair. It is the latter, the shorter, wool hair that we find to be soft. A brown bear’s fur is made up of about two-thirds of the latter form while otters (known for their soft pelts) are over 90% softer wool hair. So, as mammal fur goes, bears fall somewhere in the middle of softness, even if this mom seems downy and cuddly. #BrownBears
