Plumes of Peril 0682
As the sun sinks lower, light filters through the beautiful but perilous plumes of the White Egret. He stands on a branch, on a scrubby island isolated by water, performing a ritual dance that has likely been performed by Egrets since the dawn of their time. Each year, as breeding season approaches, the skin on his face will turn a bright green and he will grow the long plume like feathers or aigrettes that nearly brought this species to extinction. It was the near loss of this species that stimulated a conservation movement and the creation of laws to protect wild birds. The Egret became the symbol of one of the oldest environmental organizations in North America, the National Audubon Society.
This image was created by underexposing the bird against a shaded background and then processing in Lightroom. #WhiteEgrets
