Happy Hippo 1262

A hippopotamus yawns characteristically during an early morning wallow. The hippo is the third largest land mammal after the elephant and rhinoceros. Despite their stature and short legs they can easily outrun an human. They have a very aggressive disposition, making them one of the most dangerous animals in the world. Their skin is thick (over 6 inches) but despite their appearance their subcutaneous fat layer is thin. They secrete a substance that is a natural antibacterial and a sunscreen. Hippos spend most of their time wallowing in rivers, lakes and swamps. They emerge to graze on grassed in the evening and early morning hours. Even their natural sunscreen can't protect them if they stay out of water for prolonged periods. Though it may seem counterintuitive, their closest living relatives today are whales and porpoises, having had a common ancestor some 65 million years ago.
