How is a Birmingham Hip Arthroplasty different from a Total Hip Replacement?

The two procedures differ in the way the hip bone is prepared.

Traditional hip replacement involves removing the head and neck of the hip bone while the Birmingham surface replacement preserves this bone.

In a traditional hip replacement, after the bone is removed, a prosthetic ball attached to a stem is inserted into the thigh bone. Meanwhile, in a Birmingham hip arthroplasty, the preserved bone is sculpted and fitted with a metal cap that has a short stem.
