My arm shook as i took aim at his face ...

I could barely walk, so i had taken the upper level walkway to get around a large pile up of cars. thick black oil was stained into pike street, leading downhill. The walkway was bare and i made it almost to the end before i had to stop. My leg felt like glass was being squished around under the flesh. I set down the shotgun and began to try and check the wound, When i saw him shuffle from the shadows.

I grabbed the gun and aimed right for his chest, Firing with a thunderous blast, but my balance was off and i fell. The Shot ripped open his belly, thick blood oozing out like jelly. I backed up to the glass as he slowly stepped forward and stopped. He just stared, a lazy ... almost drugged up expression on his face. He had been badly burned and his flesh was yellow and wrinkly. I fumbled in my bag for more shells, but realized i had no more. I loaded the last two i had from the shell wallet attached to the gun, and cocked one into place.

We waited. He didn't advance, simply bobbed his head slowly up and down me...as if examining me out of curiosity. The gun began to shake as i held it out, my arm was weak and my eyes fluttered with dizziness.

His mouth opened, in what looked like a goldfish breathing .. like he was trying to talk. My eyes widened as he lifted a bloody hand with chewed up fingers, and seemed to be pointing at me... was .. was he trying to .. talk? communicate somehow? As eerie as it was,i couldn't look away. My head was pounding, the pain shooting lightning bolts down my spine. For a second or two, my head fell to the side as i blacked out.

The shotgun ripped thru the silence, blasting a chunk of concrete from the wall to my right.

The infected man's eyes peeled back, and his mouth parted in a snarl as he stumbled at me. I grabbed the shotgun and cocked another shell, but he was quicker, and was almost on top of me. I put all my weight on my good leg, and stood up, bending my back under his approach. As he impacted me, his hands raking across my shoulders, i fell back with him throwing him up and over the walkway railing.

His body sailed down headfirst onto the street.

I fell back against the glass, my hand grabbing for the gun... i gasped and tried to make sense of what just happened. I searched my bag, my coat. Nothing.. i had only one shell left.
