Chester - Chester Cathedral

In the Chapel of St Werburgh at Chester Cathedral, the east window — designed by Michael O’Connor and installed in 1853 — unfolds the Nativity story across four luminous Gothic Revival panels: the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Shepherds, and the Adoration of the Magi, each framed by intricate canopies and glowing with jewel‑like colour. Beneath this narrative, the altar is crowned by a serene image of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, rendered in an icon‑like style that invites quiet devotion. Together, the storytelling glass above and the intimate Marian image below create a layered focus for worship — celebrating both the mystery of Christ’s birth and Mary’s role at its heart, while uniting Victorian artistry with centuries‑old tradition in one harmonious space.
