Larvae from Hell

If any arthropod can get on my bad side it is the larval stage of the Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum). These are nearly microscopic and can go unnoticed until they start feeding. In some areas in Maryland one can pick up hundreds of these blood suckers in just a few minutes. It has been reported that a large host animal can lose 200 lbs of blood a year from these tiny ticks. They love humans but the feeling is not returned. Kent Island, Maryland
