Megaherbs! Gunnera manicata

At Dunedin Botanic Gardens. Native to southern Brazil. They die back to a big rhizome in winter (How they can live here at 45° S latitude) They look amazing when they are just sprouting from dormancy. The leaves on both upper and lower surfaces have a very rough texture that feels a bit like sandpaper. The spines are only on the underside. A very photogenic plant!
