Now say "Ahhhh!"
This fly in the backyard wasn't doing too well, and at first it didn't react at all to the presence of the camera and the flashes. I wondered if it might be dead, but eventually it did start to react a bit, notably like this, by sticking out its labium. (It's rare that you can see a fly's "trunk"/"tongue" this well - labium, maxillary palpus, labrum and labial palpi.) This individual appears to be infected with a pathogenic fungus (possibly Entomophthora sp.), and I'm not even sure if this was the fly or the fungus reacting! I'm guessing this fly will eventually look just like this.
Pentax D-FA 100mm F/2.8 WR Macro with Raynox DCR-250 diopter, and off-camera diffused Godox AD180 flash. Single frame, with a significant crop.
