North American P-51 Mustang

"Berlin Express" (B6-O) P-51C-1-NA s/n 42-103309 flown by Lt. Bill Overstreet of the 363rd FS, 357th FG, 8th AF. Overstreet was a hot pilot and was considered one of the better flyers in the 357th. He had some wild experiences during the war.

 

-He, along with a couple other pilots did loops in formation around th Golden Gate Bridge.

-Flew unconscious over Europe for 90 minutes after his oxygen system got holed by flak, regaining consciousness at treetop level.

-While suffering a sinus infection had his eyes swell shut over Berlin and had to be led back to England.

-Flew UNDER the Eifel Tower while chasing an Me-109, which he shot down. He had to fly at full throttle and low altitude over the river to escape AA fire over the city.

 

This plane was condemned for salvage/no battle damage on July 12,1944.
