electronic dictionary
I never thought I could have so much emotional attachment to a piece of machine.
This trilingual (Japanese/English/French) electronic dictionary has been in my prized possession since 2003. For 6 years, I took this guy with me everywhere I went, be it school, job interviews or work. We lived in 3 different countries, and traveled through 7 countries.
It died this morning.
This gadget being an essential part of my daily life, I had to go out and splurge 24,000yen to get a new one. Oh the stupid functions they come up with nowadays. First of all, you shouldn't be able to watch TV or play your mp3s on your dictionary. Second of all, I don't need my dictionary to test me on my vocabulary. I also don't need it to sound out the words. And just because it has French on it doesn't mean I settle for a high-school level English dictionary. Also, I don't want a big French flag on my dictionary that's screaming "I'm learning French!!!" Why can't they make them normal like they used to in 2003 ?
Not that the old one didn't come with useless stuff though. It had a button for "English for unexpected situations" in which you could find phrases like : "I don't like tomato soup", "Watch your steps!" or "I love you". I used to wonder how often you declare your love to someone in unexpected situations (where you need your dictionary to help you).
Anyway, I say good bye and thank you to this guy and to his memories, and hope the new guy will not prove to be too useless.
