Fire And Ice
Wind from the west blasts ice crystals off the top of Mount Whitney at sunset.
After a lackluster sunset in Alabama Hills week before last, I returned again yesterday with high hopes. As I checked my weather resources for possible locations, a pattern of high winds started to emerge. After several rechecks Bill McIntosh and I finally agreed that the Alabama Hills would be a 50-50 gamble but since a large storm had just dusted the Sierra Nevada's we felt it was our best chance for "adverse" conditions. The entire drive up we were buffeted by 45-50 mph winds and that hadn't let up much 3 hours later when we finally arrived in the valley. As we pulled up we watched in awe as heavy gusts blasted the peaks blowing snow crystals hundreds of feet into the air. We parked and Bill & I started frantically pulling out the gear and battening down the layers, all the while blasted from every direction. The wind couldn't figure out which way it wanted to blow from and we both scrambled for a sheltered spot with a good vantage point to setup. As I watched, the clouds lit up orange as the ice crystals reflected the suns light just when this little fireball shaped cloud floated up in front of the range. A moment later an even larger blast hit it from behind and it disappeared forever.
As the color slowly faded from the sky all I could think about was how nice it was going to be once we fired up the heater back at the car. That turned out to be a self inflicted torture as the sensation finally returned to my fingertips half hour later, Hehe.
