The Grinch Meets Scrooge at Little Corona Del Mar

Today at 3:15 I received a text from my friend Bill, Hey, He says, there will be high clouds with a decent possibility of good color at sunset, wanna meet up at Corona Del Mar?

Last time Bill ask if I wanted to meet there I had to opt out because of the flu and that day he walked away with one of the most amazing shots I've ever seen. No way I'm passing on a second invite!!

CDM is 1hr. and 5 mins. from my home and sunset is at 4:40, that would give me 10mins to get ready and head out the door and 10 mins to find parking and get down to the beach. So off I went, racing down the 15 freeway like Mario Andretti. I was passing cars like they were standing still and made up an extra 5 mins. during the "INDY 500".

1 hour later I'm sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on Pacific Coast Highway 10 minutes away from the beach and to my dismay Newport Beach was having the annual Christmas Walk along PCH. The place was packed with people walking around with their Christmas hats and Santa suits and oversized candy canes, and I'm sitting there watching, pissed off angry and grumbling. I felt like a bipolar version of the The Grinch and Scrooge. "BAH HUMBUG" I exclaimed, so much for the 10 min window to get down to the beach. I finally hit Hazel st. which puts you right on the ramp leading down to the beach and just my good fortune a car was just pulling out leaving a spot vacant, SWEET!!!! The photo gods were shining down on me. I looked over at the ocean and could see the sun just touching the horizon and started the 5 minute mad dash down the ramp leading onto the beach. By the time I rounded the corner on the bottom of the ramp leading to the beach the sun was just disappearing below the sea. I'm running past people kicking up sand the whole way and I pass by a dad telling his kid, "there goes the sun little buddy". Blast!!!! I was supposed to get over the rocks to the south and meet Bill at the cave facing towards the Arch at Cliff Rock, Well that wasn't going to happen!!! All I could do is setup and shoot what I can get before it was too late and here is the result.

Damn Foiled again!!!!!

While shooting, I ran into fellow photographer Mike Teague who was snapping away, we exchanged pleasantries and then struck up a conversation about drone photography and shooting around Lone Pine. I showed him some of my work and we exchanged contact info, Cool, another local photographer to shoot around with, Turns out he's a really cool guy and he's on Instagram. Here's a link to his stream there.
