Transformed Found Object Performance

This piece is a collaboration between myself and Danae Lagoy. We created the piece in response to the "transformed found object" assignment that we received from our 3-D Design professors at Cooper Union.

The main transformed object in the work is a large cable spool. A picture of the spool in its original state can be seen here.

We transformed this spool into a platform or device for the mainplation of ferrofluid, a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field. Essentially, when ferrofluid is exposed to a magnetic field it takes the form of that field.

We created a sound composition from sounds recorded during the deconstruction of the cable spool and based our manipulations of the ferrofluid during the performance off of this composition.

The fluid was manipulated using four electromagnets, the metal cores of which were 22 in. long 5/8th bolts that were found at the center of the spool. These electromagents were powered by a variac (autotransformer) which allowed us to control the electrical current running through the magnets, and therefore the strength of the magnets.

The main manipulation of the fluid, however, came from hand-held ceramic and bar magnets which allowed each performer to manually control the feel and flow of the fluid. The performer controlling these hand-held magnets relied entirely on auditory and emotive reactions to the the sound composition as they could not see the forms the fluid took above them during the performance.

The piece is intended to focus on the notions of context in art, as well as the relationship between the worlds of art and science.
