Birkenau: Not your usual travel shot.
I have some trepidation posting an ugly image like this on a site that more usually celebrates beauty. But I believe we all have a duty to reflect from time to time on the dark side of our species. In 2008 I did a lot of this. My travels took me to The Killing Fields and Tull Sleng in Cambodia, to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, to the genocide churches in Rwanda, to Auschwitz, and next door to Birkenau. I have too many ugly photos to choose from, but I have picked this one to post.
