Be sure to register your non-CPU lenses (focal length, aperture, AI/non-AI) in the menu, and flip up the AI coupling tab on the Df when using a non-AI lens.

You can then meter with the camera using AI or non-AI lenses, working in M and A mode. With AI lenses, change the aperture on the lens aperture ring and the camera will reflect that aperture setting. With non-AI lenses you have to manually match the aperture ring setting with the camera's aperture setting that you dial in (and view in the viewfinder or displays).
