Scad Head WWII Coastal Gun Battery

Scad Head WWII Coastal Gun Battery

At the bottom of a steep hill so served by an inclined tramway then short length of light railway at the bottom.

Some pieces of track can be seen and some of the winding gear.

There is a building by the shore with submarine cables terminating in it. These are protected with iron sleeves as they come up the beach. This was in use postwar - there is a report of loop of cable around Scapa Flow connecting various sites to the Black House. It is thought that the coastal batteries might have been interconnected with submarine cable during WWII because it would be less vulnerable to damage than overhead lines on land.

These pictures were taken in 2005 and are not Geotagged so not attempted to identify specific locations for most of them.
