Arisaig Canal
Arisaig Canal
-
This ran from Loch nan Eala (NM 66778 85974) past Mains of Arisaig (NM 66619 86249) where there was a steam powered saw mill (according to several websites), crosses the road at NM 66145 86181 before running to the bay at NM 65821 86095.
The channel runs through solid rock much of the way and the rest is lined with masonry.
The sources say that it was used to float timber from the saw mill out to sea.
A masonry bridge crosses the canal to the Mains of Arisaig at NM 66605 86021 and there are the remains of a smaller bridge at NM 66502 86241.
The channel widens at NM 66531 86240 and there is perhaps a "quay" where the swan timber was put in the water to float out to sea.

"The small canal, which cuts through metamorphic rock, was formed from a burn emerging from Loch nan Eala. It allowed sawn timber from the sawmill at Mains Farm to be floated to the sea loch. "

"There used to be a steam-driven sawmill at Mains Farm just by here and this burn flowing by was cut out and deepened so that sawn timber could be floated down to the sea. This lowered area on the far side looks like it may have been where the timber was put in to the water."
