The Karo people
of Ethiopia's Lower Omo Valley
With a population of about 1500 people the Karo are among the most endangered groups of the lower Omo region, inhabiting the eastern bank of the Omo river. Formerly pastoralists, many have turned to agriculture.
In appearance, language and tradition, they somewhat resemble the Hamer (they are related). The Karo are masters of body painting and use chalk and are renowned to imitate the plumage of birds.
