The Sangha: Becoming a Monk in Thailand

A monk in Thailand is treated with great respect, and the institution itself is highly revered. The Sangha is the official Order of Monks. Becoming a monk in Thailand is a way of earning honor or merit for one's parents. Those who cannot become full-pledged monks, perhaps due to financial obligations to the family, for example, may do a 3-month Buddhist retreat instead as a short period of service to the monastery.

This photo shows a monk who has served and is about to leave the monastery. You will see the older ordained monks in the front near the altar giving their blessings.

I posted a second photo to show the beauty of the Buddha in this temple. This is in the Marble temple, the only temple in Thailand made of Italian marble. The King at the time of this temple's construction was raised and studied in the West, and had a fancy for things European, thus this marble temple.

Good night my friends. It is almost midnight and time to go to sleep! See you in the morning!
