1920's, Veere, girls in local costume

See '1920's, Veere, girls in local costume' On Black!

The local costume, as it was worn 'for real' by, in this case, the young girls in the family. Note that the three older ones already wear the wide 'young woman's cap and that the smallest child on the right still wears a little girl's cap. This was also the time that it was normal for rural Dutch people to walk around on clogs...

The picture was taken by my grandfather . The girls are the daughters of farmer Joosse, a neighbor, and were playmates of my mother's, especially the youngest girl on the right, Jane, who was more or less her age. She is alive today and more than 90 years old! In the background is the house , on the dike outside Veere where my mother grew up.

If you are interested in these and other costumes from Zeeland, you might want to check this site out. By clicking on the map you will see the different costumes from the different areas. Accompanying text unfortunately in Dutch only!
