The first leg of our trip we stayed with our dear friend Christine in her apartment on Second Ave/4th Street in Manhattan, smack in the middle of the old 'Lower East Side": not only the neighborhood that provided Luz with her earliest childhood memories -having lived there between the ages of 3 and 10 years oldm - but also the apartment I shared with Christine for a while when I worked in NYC in the early eighties.
On our first day we got up extremely early (yes, jet lag, of course...) and walked the streets between 6 and 8 AM. Needless to say we found many changes since we last roamed these streets 5 years ago. Brightly colored fun storefronts like this one, however, could always be found in this artsy fartsy area... The wallpainting reminds us of pre 9/11 days while the name of the cafe reinforces New York's reputation for amoral and sinful fun...
