This girl is being cared for at a wonderful residential school for students who are mentally disabled. She sat with a friend near a window as we visited, and she didn't seem able to speak . . . or maybe she's just really good at listening quietly. I couldn't think of much to say, either.

 

I was amazed at the commitment and skill of the teachers at this school, and they are helping the students live purposeful lives. The students are trained to produce art and craft items that are beautiful and help cover expenses. The students welcomed us in a wide variety of ways, and they seemed very secure and happy and at home.

 

Our host told us that many children in India and around the world with mental disabilities are abandoned by their families and do not survive.
