w04p1 Texture

Black, brown and values thereof. I know, it’s just a dead leaf on soil that is gathering mold, but to me, the color and texture of this photo has a quiet comfort.

After going through our closet and shooting picture after picture of clothing textures that I was not happy with, I moved on to a pot of soil and a dead leaf. It may seem like a simple shot. After all, how hard can it be to take a picture of a leaf laying on the soil? Well this leaf didn’t belong on this soil. It’s a fake! No it’s a real leaf it just didn’t belong on this soil. But I liked the texture of the rough, dry, cracked soil with the white mold beginning to form. The big leaf is only about an inch long. The pot of soil used as the background is only about eight inches in diameter. So, one of the challenges was to get the layout I wanted without being able to see the sides of the pot. The other challenge was the lighting. I wanted natural light so I set the pot on a window sill in our bedroom but then I had to stand on the bed to get high enough to shoot down on it. That didn’t work. It was too bright and over exposed. So, I lowered the pot. Still too bright. Then I tried closing the window blinds to various degrees until I was satisfied with the amount of light coming through and in what I was seeing.
