A 7 inch bird with bright blue above and on the wings and tail with a rusty throat and breast having a white belly and undertail coverts. The female is similarly colored but duller.
It inhabits open woodlands and farmlands with scattered trees.
An eastern bird, they range east of the Rockies in southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. They can also be found in the mountains in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. They winter in the southern part of their range.
