Spines and seeds

Here's an image made in the late summer of 2021. I'm slowly, slowly, slowly catching up with my backlog of film developing. I managed to develop ten films a few weeks ago - only thirty or so to go ...

I have often been struck by how successfully some photographers capture a kind of intimacy or evocation in their photographs of seeds and flowers: a kind of fragility reflected in the framing, depth of field, and contrasting. Occasionally, I manage it with close-ish work, but I find more distant subjects caught with a 'normal' lens challenging. I could not decide whether or not this photograph made the cut.

I have intervened after scanning more than is usual for me, though, not in any way that I believe I could not achieve in the darkroom, if I had one: a little cropping, a little burning of the background, a little contrast enhancement for the seeds. The result is unrefined, perhaps, but so are my darkroom skills.

Thistle seeds, Blenheim Park, late summer 2021. Pentax SPII, probably a 50/1.4 Super Multi Coated Takumar, Rollei Superpan 200 in 510 Pyro.
