Macross +++ 1:160 Destroid "Monster" HWR-00-Mk. II

New pics from an old kit - the huge(!) 1:160 Destroid Monster from Macross, made by Arii.

I bought and built this kit about 30 years ago, found in a dark corner of a local RPG shop and it cost a relative fortune at that time (relative to my budget). But it was the first and only 1:160 kit I have ever seen of this mecha, until today.

The smaller 1:200 kit pops up here and there, but not its bigger cousin.

Due to its size and bulkiness, the model is hard to portray, and it is hard to convey the sheer bulk and size it would have in real life. After some recent success with bigger background posters I gave the Monster a new try - and here's the result.

The kit was built OOB, painted with Tamiya acrylics and just slightly weathered; it is one of the last "1st generation" mecha kits I built in the very late Eighties. Since it is still in good shape, I did not (want to) re-build it - it also has a high sentimental value, since it is one of the models in my collection that is still around and in good shape.

Today, if I were to build it again, I'd change some things, e. g. better howitzer cannon barrels on the back (the parts did not fit at all, and the shape of each cannon barrel is rather oval than round, and different from each other...) and maybe an implanted cockpit with clear windows and some interiors. Some joints (esp. the arms) would need some tuning, too. It's all pretty wobbly and fit is mediocre.

But overall, it is a great mecha design (not certain it was conceived by Shoji Kawamori?) and not a bad kit - it is just simple and old.

An impressive piece!
