Baseball & Bubble Gum

Baseball cards made their appearance in the late 1800's and were generally sold along with cigarette packs. With increased legislation banning tobacco sales to minors, in the 1930's, two companies, Fleer (maker of Double Bubble) and Goudey Gum began to include gum with the cards. Topps emerged in the early 1950's and became one of the most popular brands. This continued until 1991 when collectors complained that the gum left stains on the cards.

Some of the packs displayed in the photo contain the original sticks of Bubble Gum. However, it would probably be inadvisable to put something in your mouth, other than a fine wine or Scotch, that is close to 30 years old!

The ball signed by A. Bartlett Giamatti (facsimile) who was the National League President in 1988 replacing Peter Ueberroth. In Aug 1989, after a lengthy investigation, he handed Pete Rose a lifetime suspension from MLB. Shortly thereafter, he died from a heart attack on September 1 at the age of 51. He was replaced by Bill White, the 1st African American to hold such a high position in all of Sports.
