Blueberry Granola Cookies

View on Black

My original idea for this photo was to create a solar eclipse like effect. To achieve this, I took a bite out of one of the cookies, and placed it on a pane of glass suspended by two chairs. Then I put some black material down to create the backdrop. Afterwords, I proceeded to place the speedlite below the glass, aiming it at the cookie, and attached a quickly made cardboard snoot with a bit of black paper over top to remove the color cast. That provided as the main light source.

To light up the opposite side, the side facing the camera, I attempted to use a reflector, but I wasn't getting enough light. So I broke out the brand new, and super powerful 3 watt LED Maglite, and stood a little ways away and focused the flashlight beam onto the cookie. This time the results were quite satisfactory, and after adjusting the white balance in Lightroom, the colors turned out quite nice.

Also, It's important to note that this is the first time I've done any food photography with my new tripod, which I must admit, was a great experience! Just having the ability to literally suspend the camera directly over the subject was amazing, and a necessity to capture a photo like this. Also, the fact that it was super stable was a great boon as well, because as I found out, if any element, be it the cookie, the speedlite, or the camera moved, even a tiny bit, it would totally ruin the lens flair effect.

And for those of you who are curious how this whole setup looked, here is a photo showing you the general setup: www.flickr.com/photos/differentview/3217322793/
