WATCHTOWERS IN THE WALLED CITY

Watchtowers were attached on the corners of a fortification to observe the seashores, and massive land areas if there are pirates, or groups that aims to invade a territory, just like in Intramuros. During 1500s to 1600s, Intramuros was a target to many foreign invasions such as those came from China, Japan, and other invaders. To avoid those incidents, the Spanish Government had several plans to build walls with watchtowers for additional defense. These watchtowers are still intact until today (some of them are found in Fort Santiago, Baluarte De Dilao, Baluarte de San Diego, Baluarte De San Andres, Baluarte De San Gabriel, and other parts of Intramuros).
