9-year-old Weam Al Astal waits to undergo surgery at the Shifa Hospital, Gaza. She suffered major injuries to her legs after being caught in an explosion during the conflict in Gaza in the summer of 2014. But despite her injuries, she still manages to keep smiling.
UK aid from the Department for International Development has funded teams of NHS doctors to deploy to Gaza in conjunction with British charities Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) and IDEALS. They're providing post-conflict surgery to some of the people who were most severely injured in the conflict last year. The doctors volunteer in their spare time to visit Gaza each month to work alongside their Palestinian colleagues.
