Varanasi, UP India march 2013.
Varanasi was the definitive Maha Kumbh Mela after party. In the weeks I spent there I watched at the cities population swelled and deflate to astronomical proportions. Where there was literally zero accommodation to being almost empty. I left Kumbh two days after the biggest event date, and was able to get accommodation which I had for the entire time I was in the city. After the glut of kumbh revelers left and went on to their own destinations, the city emptied for a few days and again swelled beyond that of the additional 7,000,000 people that Kumbh had brought. Suha ratri (Shivaratri) of festival of Shiva vacuumed up almost three times the Kumbh numbers over the course of a week. These numbers mean nothing when you are on the ground other than knowing that personal space disappears.
I can honestly say that I never felt more alive then when I was in Varanasi.
