Northern Shovelers . . .

. . . Northern Shovelers sometimes swim in group circles to stir the food up from the pond. In the middle of this shot is a rare Shoveler which is showing leucism, or a loss of pigment due to a genetic defect.

Here is a definition: "an abnormal condition of reduced pigmentation affecting various animals (such as birds, mammals, and reptiles) that is marked by overall pale color or patches of reduced coloring and is caused by a genetic mutation which inhibits melanin and other pigments from being deposited in feathers, hair, or skin."

Have a great week Facebook, Flickr, and 500px friends!
