Moon jellyfish underside (Paul Naylor)
Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita)
The common or ‘moon’ jellyfish can be found close to the coast all around the UK. It is a large predator that captures its prey using either the stinging cells along its tentacles, passing the food to the central mouth using its four arms, or using tiny hair-like cilia to pass planktonic food captured using the mucus lining its bell-shaped body.
