John Brown's Fort

John Brown's Fort (Firehouse) located in Harper's Ferry.

October 16th, 1859 Abolitionist John Brown & his raiders attacked Harper's Ferry & barricaded themselves in this building until the U.S. Marines stormed the building on the 19th & captured Brown. He was found guilty of murder, inciting slaves to rebel & treason. He was executed by hanging in the nearby town of Charles Town on December 2nd, 1859.

This act would ultimately help to fuel the fire of secession leading to 4 years of bloodshed & horrendous loss of life in the American Civil War.

In 1862, Harper's Ferry will fall to the Confederacy after General Lee splits his army on the way to Antietam. In July of 1862, it will return to Union control.
