The Day of the Dilla is Approaching Quickly

February 7 is Dilla Day in Detroit. A celebration of the life of James Yauncey ( aka J Dilla ) is happening at the Fillmore on that date. The 3rd annual Dilla Day features performances by De La Soul and Slum Village, among others. Here's a little bit about James:

James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006), aka J Dilla or Jay Dee, was a Detroit born record producer and rapper who emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip-hop scene in Detroit, Michigan. According to NPR.org, he "was one of the music industry's most influential hip-hop artists", working with big-name acts such as A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, MF Doom, Kanye West, The Brand New Heavies, The Pharcyde and Common. Yancey died in 2006 of the blood disease thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
