This photograph of a Mother Wood Bison (Bison bison athabascae), and her calf, was taken an altitude of Five hundred and sixty six metres, at 14:08pm on Wednesday May 11th 2016 past Muncho Lake Provincial Park and heading towards Liard River Hot springs at Mile 475 on the Alaska Highway 97,British Columbia, Canada.
Often referred to incorrectly as Buffalo, the Bull Wood Bison roams the plains along the Alaska Highway, and I was fortunate to have a few encounters with these huge, majestic beauties, having several of the herd pass close by me at one point. These are the largest native terrestrial Mammals in North America and are commonly referred to as the American Bison. At six years, a mature Bull can exceed 2 metres at the shoulder and weigh 900kgs.
