Like a gliding dance

A few days ago I met those young men at Darbhanga ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).

It was during a Muslim festival day and most of the people who came to enjoy this peaceful place were happy.

Like many Banarsi those three young men are wearing a dhoti kurta which is a combination of a kurta on the top and a dhoti wrapped around the waist and the legs, and knotted at the waist.

Usualy Muslims wear it straight while Hindus bring a side between the legs and tuck it into the waist at the back (www.flickr.com/photos/designldg/2245714074).

This timeless garment gives a whimsical charm to people who therefore have to walk with a real allure and elegance.

They seem to be gliding, and to move smoothly, continuously, and effortlessly.

I kept on taking pictures of this trio, they felt a little shy but they enjoyed it.

I was telling them jokes to make them feel easy and later they were satisfied to see the pictures that I took.

Today people are observing Muharram (محرم) in India; it is undoubtedly the most Indianised of all Islamic observances even followed by some Hindus.

The date is important for all Muslims especially Shias since Hussein ibn Ali, the 3rd Imam of Shiism, was killed on this day.
