NREL researchers Francois Usseglio-Viretta and Nicholas Brunhart-Lupo, use the 3D visualization Lab in the Insight Center at the ESIF, to work on the Microstructure Analysis ToolBOX - 3D tetrahedron-based unstructured volumetric meshes of a lithium ion battery cell, with electrode materials (left: cathode, and right: anode) sharing conforming interfaces with the electrolyte volume (center).
Meshes, typically in the 10-100 million vertices range, exhibit smooth interfaces with higher cell density near the interface to finely model the complex electrochemical interfacial reaction.
