Tribal Elder / Arlee Powwow

Attending the 120th Annual Arlee Pow Wow Esyapqeyni, a 6-day event held in Arlee, Montana, was a very uplifting experience and then some, the celebration and the unification of various Native American tribes from around the country, mostly from the northwest, was characterized by shared affections, fellowship and friendly cooperation of the highest order.

The event, as are all of the Pow Wows that I have attended, was

open to the public and, as such, there was a mixing bowl, a melting pot, of visitors from all walks of life, and from many surrounding states and jurisdictions.

I made photographic captures of many different people throughout the day, and the dancing and the drumming exhibitions by the various tribes was both boldly colorful and joyful to behold.

In the end, my favorite photograph was of this handsome tribal

elder, caught in deep thought or prayer, captured inside the huge pavilion that housed the celebration. From my perch on high, with a telephoto lens employed for this shot, he was not aware of me. On the contrary, I was very much aware of him throughout the days activities and, in my fairly vast collection of photographs of him, he never failed to look like a man of great character and spirit.
