Picnic, Coonoor, 31 July 1894

At centre facing the camera is Br Malachy Carew (1865-1938). Br Malachy was born Patrick Carew at Doorish, Rossmore, Cashel, Co. Tipperary. He entered Mountrath Monastery in 1885 and was finally professed on 10 January 1893. When St Joseph's Orphanage and College, Coonoor, opened in January 1893 he went there as Superior. After five years there, he contracted enteric fever which brought him near death and necessitated his transfer to Ireland in April 1898. He variously served as Superior at both Mallow and Mountrath and was Assistant Superior General. In 1919, he was appointed Provincial in India but ill-health forced his return to Ireland in 1922. He died at Tullow in 1938.
