35:365 May 20 ~~ horse conch and foot
I would have to say that horse conch are one of the most aggressive Floridian shells. I have handled live shells and had them attempt to attack me. (yes I screamed, no I didn't drop it!) You used to be able to collect live shells off Sanibel Island but that has now changed. I am good with that.. it makes sense. Just makes shelling more of a challenge to get a good specimen.
Anyways, yes about Mr. Horse Conch: he loves to eat oysters, clams and other snails. I have photographed his operculum (foot) along side the shell. This is his 'foot' so he can move along the bottom in search for food. It also serves as protection. For example, the one that attacked me, struck quickly and then retreated into his shell, and the operculum acts as a type of door. Alright Mr. Meany, bite me and into the bucket you go!!!
I didn't find this shell, Bob did. Yes, it's true.. he is a much better 'sheller' then I am. I end up talking to people too much (surprise surprise!) :-)
*disclaimer from Bob* this foot doesn't go with this shell. It wasn't taken live. But it is a horse conch foot.
Have a great day enjoying His creation!
