Plane Scape @ ZAAL5, Den Haag
Plane Scape onderzoekt de relaties tussen beeld, geluid en ruimte. De bezoeker wordt ondergedompeld in een omgeving die voortdurend een nieuwe defenitie aan de ruimte geeft. Een doolhof van duizenden rubberen elastieken, gespannen van de grond tot aan het plafond van ZAAL5, vormt een raster van verticale lijnen waarop een steeds verschuivend abstract landschap geprojecteerd wordt.
De installatie is ontworpen op een manier die de kijker onderdeel maakt van het werk, doordat er geen afstand is tussen projectie, publiek en scherm. De elastieken versnijden het tweedimensionale beeld, waardoor de geprojecteerde lijnen en vlakken exploderen in een wolk van bewegende punten. Verandering in het beeld wordt begeleid door een geluidscompositie vanuit een opstelling met zes luidsprekers.
Plane Scape is een samenwerking tussen Wolfgang Bittner, Lyndsey Housden, Yoko Seyama en Jeroen Uyttendaele. Alle kunstenaars zijn voormalige studenten aan de master opleiding van ArtScience.
Plane Scape investigates relationships between image, sound and space. The visitor finds himself immersed in an environment which is constantly redefining the space. Thousands of white elastic rubber bands are hung floor to ceiling in zaal5. Following a well-elaborated structure, this grid of vertical lines redefines the space.
The installation deals with conceptions of cinematic space and the viewer in relation to the projection, i.e. the human to his surroundings. It is designed in a way that directly integrates the viewer by breaking up the distance between projection, audience and screen. Plane Scape is an accessible screen, which considers the image an environment rather than a two dimensional plane.
The elastic strips slice up the projected 2D image in space, exploding the screen into depth and scattering projected lines and planes into clouds of moving points. Changes in the movement of the projected imagery is accompanied by a six-channel sound composition.
Plane scape is a collaboration between Wolfgang Bittner, Lyndsey Housden, Yoko Seyama and Jeroen Uyttendaele, winners of the BNG Workspace competition 2010 of Filmhuis Den Haag/ZAAL5. Planescape was made possible by Cultuurfonds BNG en Fonds 1818. All artist completed the master programme at Artscience, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
