Apollo 11 landed on the moon July 20, 1969. The lunar module craft carried both Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr. The lunar module was named Eagle, and the command module, piloted by Michael Collins was named Columbia, from the constellation Columba, meaning dove which is the international symbol for peace. By landing the first humans on the surface of the moon, the ambitious goals of the Apollo project had been met. Eight years earlier President John F. Kennedy first announced the ideas of the Apollo project in a speech at Rice Univeristy, and in that speech he projected that hopes of the program would be realized before the decade ran out. Apollo succeeded in so many ways, including meeting its main objective by landing two astronauts on the moon during the 1960's, and bringing the crew of three back home safely.
After Apollo had met its objectives and made several successful landings, the next phase in exploration would be the shuttle program. On April 12, 1981 the space shuttle Columbia made its maiden orbital space flight. Officially known as the Space Transportaion System (STS), the innaugural flight took place at precisely 7:00 am EST. The Space Shuttle program officially ended one week ago, August 31, 2011, after completing many very important scientific endeavors as well construction and visits to the International Space Station.
