Sarah Bernhardt découvre Belle-Île en 1894, à l’âge de 50 ans. Son ami, le peintre Clairin, lui en a tant parlé qu’elle décide enfin de l’accompagner. Sous l’effet d’un véritable coup de foudre, elle fait l’acquisition d’un fortin militaire désaffecté à la Pointe des Poulains. Durant trente ans, elle y séjournera, chaque année, pour fuir la vie parisienne éprouvante et s’y reposer, escortée d’une foule d’artistes et de personnalités.

Sarah Bernhardt discovered Belle-Île in 1894, at the age of 50. Her friend, the painter Clairin, told her so much that she finally decides to accompany him. Love at first sight, she acquired a disused military fort at Pointe des Poulains. For thirty years, she will stay there, each year, to escape the grueling Parisian life and to rest there, escorted by a host of artists and personalities.
