Phil says; 500 mm. That would be 10 x a 50 mm lens, or a blowup factor of 10. Actually it would be 15X for a digital camera like he is using. If he has a 2X extender, that would give him a blowup factor of 30—really up close and personal. The minus side of that is the necessity of a tripod and cable release. The other minus side is cost. If it is a good lens (and I suspect it is), you are looking at around $5300 for the lens he has. And you can forget any kind of action shot, at least in nature photography.
