A Meeting of the Geeps
CSXT's L136 meets Yorkrail's RJ2 just west of Broadway in Hanover, PA on August 15, 2025. Yorkrail uses "trackage rights" over CSXT's Hanover Sub to reach a small stub of theirs that was formerly the Pennsylvania Railroad's Frederick Branch which has one customer on the west side of Hanover. Beyond that customer, the track has been abandoned all the way to Taneytown, MD since the late 1970s when Yorkrail predecessor Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad gave up on the trackage. In 1989, CSXT sold the former Western Maryland York Subdivision to Emons Industries who owned the "Ma & Pa" at the time. It didn't take long for Emons to incorporate a new non-unionized railroad called Yorkrail to operate the newly acquired York Sub and abandon most of the parallel but redundant Frederick Branch, keeping small segments here and there to serve the remaining customers. To the right in this photograph the Frederick Branch can be seen among the weeds. It has been dormant for decades. The line used to cross the Hanover Sub on a diamond about a half a mile behind the locomotives here. The diamond was deemed unnecessary and was removed in August 2019 almost 6 years to the day of this photograph. Kodak Ektachrome E100, Pentax MX.
