Alto
October 17, 1998 was business as usual for the operator at Alto Tower in Altoona PA along Conrail's Pittsburgh Line. At the moment no trains are nearby-yet. Don't be fooled by the empty mainline trackage here. This was a very busy interlocking for Conrail with a constant parade of eastbound and westbound traffic including four Amtrak passenger trains (2 east & 2 west) plus the usual lite helper moves to assist the traffic patterns. After Norfolk Southern took over, Alto was remoted and is now controlled by the dispatchers in Atlanta GA. The tower remains but is closed. The track diverging off to the left goes to Hollidaysburg. In the foreground is a switch machine and it's switch heater for when winter takes a swipe at operations here.
