Farewell Excursion at Linthicum
The Farewell To The Baltimore & Annapolis Trolleys excursion is paused at Linthicum on the freight only trackage while B&A motor #18 does some switching on the mainline on January 22, 1950. The freight only track was originally the Annapolis Short Line's mainline to Baltimore. After the 1921 merger with neighbor WB&A, a new connection was constructed between the two railroads allowing the Short Line's trains to use the WB&A's main into Baltimore. The ASL main was kept for freight service up to the junction at Clifford with the Baltimore & Ohio's Curtis Bay Branch.
After the demise of the Washington Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad on August 22, 1935, the newly reorganized Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad purchased the WB&A main between Linthicum and Westport where the new railroad constructed a connecting track to the B&O's South Baltimore Branch near Carrolls. B&A interurban trains then used trackage rights over the B&O to reach Camden Station. The original Short Line main from here to Clifford remained for freight service
In this photograph freight motor #18 is on the connecting track while the excursion train has ducked out of the way on the freight only, former ASL main. To the extreme left is a B&A bus parked on the original WB&A right of way. The interurban trolleys including freight motor #18 had about two weeks left before the buses and a single GE diesel electric switcher would take over.
